Marriages certificates are archived after 70 years, death certificates after 30 years. Still, even with these documents archived, an apostille or supplementary certification may be attached, e.g. for procedures determining citizenship. These documents are only available in German.

Most civil birth, marriage, and death records in Germany are maintained by the civil registration office (Standesamt) in the local towns. You can usually obtain civil registration records by writing (in German) to the town with the appropriate names and dates, the reason for your request, and proof of your relationship to the individual (s).

They are an excellent source for information on names and dates and places of births, marriages, and deaths. These records are kept by the civil registrar [German: Standesbeamte] at the civil registry office (Standesamt).
